Thomas brings over four decades of experience in the automotive industry, with a distinguished career at ZF Group and its subsidiaries. He began his journey in 1982 with an apprenticeship at ZF, concurrently earning degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration.​ Throughout his tenure at ZF, Thomas held various engineering and sales roles, focusing on commercial and special-purpose vehicles across Asia and the USA. In 2002, he spearheaded the development of new business areas, including gearboxes for wind turbines and telematics solutions.​

From 2010 to 2019, as an expatriate in the Czech Republic, he transformed ZF subsidiary Openmatics from a project concept into a fully independent entity, establishing it as an open telematics platform for buses and trucks.​ In 2020, Thomas assumed the role of Director of Automotive Ecosystems at ZF, leading data space initiatives such as Catena-X, MDS, and Gaia-X. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Catena-X consortium and association, including coining the name "Catena-X," and served as a board member.​ In January 2023, he was appointed Interim CEO and Managing Director of Cofinity-X, leading a cross-shareholder team to establish the organization and expedite the deployment of its core services. After a brief return to ZF, he resumed his role as CEO / Managing Director of Cofinity-X on April 1, 2024.​
